Tiffany S. is what some might call a meat rabbit guru and she’s certain that no matter how cute and fuzzy they are, when it comes down to it, you will be able to do what’s necessary to put food on the table. You can find her over at Raising Rabbits for Meat, a blog appropriately titled since it’s all about how to get Continue reading the story "6 Ways that Starting to Raise Meat Rabbits Will Make You More Self-Sufficient"

Barn Raising!

I just realized that I never posted how we built our goat barn and chicken coop back in March. Our old chicken coop just wasn't going to cut it anymore since we had gotten goats. They needed a lot more space than what the chicken run could provide. So we scouted out the largest open area in our yard. Well, along the back fence we Continue reading the story "Barn Raising!"

The Outdoor Brooder

We've tried raising chicks several different ways. We've let a broody girl take over as mom - which, in my opinion, is the best way to do it as long as you're dead set on having hand raised birds. Our hen raised birds are not friendly, but we don't mind that. And we've also raised chicks in a brooder. We don't really have a place Continue reading the story "The Outdoor Brooder"

What to do with Chicken Manure

I recently got a fantastic question from a friend about chicken manure and what is the best way to use it as fertilizer without causing pollution. A very thoughtful question and since I discussed chickens last week and touched on this issue a little bit I thought I'd expand on it some more and share more options for manure management.

Chickens and Neighbors

We got a question from meemsnyc of Gardening in the Buroughs of NYC:

My husband wants to raise a few chickens, but I'm very hesitant. We live in a city environment. We have neighbors really close to our yard. Are chickens loud? I don't want to make our neighbors angry with us if they are.

Believe it or not this is a pretty Continue reading the story "Chickens and Neighbors"

Michaela, the Urban Dirt Girl from Urban Dirt asked us:

What was the first thing you did when developing your land? Did you have a master plan or just chipped away at cultivating? Also, what animals did you decide to raise first?

Got Chicks?

We do! We gave up the broody hen approach. On Thursday Tom and I stood at the fence to the chicken/goat yard and watched the hens. There was one thing that stood out. The chickens we didn't hand raise were by far the meanest of all the hens. Our hand raised ones were definitely more mellow and not nearly as aggressive. So we decided to Continue reading the story "Got Chicks?"
