Own chickens but want to know more? I’ll be teaching and advanced chicken keeping class on October 10th in Berkeley from 6pm to 8pm. I’ll go over introducing new birds to your flock, health care from prevention to diagnosing problems, holistic and traditional care and when a vet should be contacted, nutrition and mixing your own feed and feed supplements and the life cycle of chickens including hatching your own. We’ll also discuss dealing with predators, bio-security and behavioral issues and answer your most pressing chicken questions. The class is through Biofuel Oasis and will be held at Sticky Art Lab in Berkeley. Check out Biofuel Oasis’ page on classes to register.

I wish I could be there! Maybe you will have time to post something about chicken food on this site. Much to my disappointment, the commercial feed I buy is now marked as containing genetically modified soy. I was pretty surprised since Europeans, including the French, have resisted GM grains. Thanks for all your great posts.
Hey Maggie, Where do you live? We get organic feed from Modesto Milling or Hunt & Behrens. We buy directly from the mill which makes the cost about the same as conventional at the feed store. There’s a mix for chickens going around online but you still have to make sure it’s all organic to avoid GMOs and it’s really expensive to do yourself.
Sounds interesting, but I do not live in the area. I’d love to hear more about adding new birds into the flock. I’m just getting started with raising my own chickens and am about to add nesting boxes to the coop. Is it best to raise the nests off the floor? Some books say not to add a light to the coop, how do you extend the laying season? So many questions….
Thanks for all you do!
Denise
Denise, it’s best to get the nest boxes off the ground. This will help keep them dry and also be less likely to have eggs stolen by rodents. We don’t put a light in the coop just because we feel our girls deserve a rest in the winter from all the heavy egg laying they did the rest of the year. You can definitely add a light though if you want.
Rachel, you should consider taping your series for those of us far away ~ you are providing knowledge not available in our local area, at least in no way that is easily accessible! Thanks for all you do!
