I love to walk around the Ferry Building. The building is amazing. The Bay is amazing. The food is AMAZING! One of my favorite places there is Far West Fungi. They have a wonderful selection of mushrooms. Most of them I have never seen before in the wild and certainly not in the grocery store. They have so many California wild mushrooms as well as others from around the world; both dried and fresh. Some of their other products include, truffle oils and butter, dressings, sauces, medicinals and ice cream. Yummers. I have even seen Fiddlehead ferns there. (Don’t know what to do with those yet. But it is on my list.)

If you love mushrooms, an inexpensive way to get them is to just grow your own. You can also start your own larger mushroom logs in your back yard! Watch this short instructional video that shows how to inoculate a log with spore plugs. Shitake sushi anyone?

They offer enticing kits, don't they?
I failed utterly with the kits, until I gave up and shoved them in the corner. Then I accidentally grew the biggest prettiest oyster mushroom I had ever seen.
If you got to my blog, and select the mushroom tag, you can read about the misadventures. I can't seem to attach the link, as I'm typing on my phone.
We found some gorgeous black trumpet mushrooms on the property here this last winter. If we find them again, at $14/lb, I'm NOT going to ignore them!
Rick and I forage mushrooms. We've had quite a haul this year! I am waiting on some photos before blog about the Agaricus Augustus ("prince mushroom") risotto I made last week.
Because of the rains this year, we have had a longer season for winter/early spring mushrooms, and the morels haven't really started popping yet in this area. But I'm keeping my eyes peeled – they're my favorite.
In the meantime, I love to get a little brown bag of something special from Far West when I run into them at the farmer's market.
They were at the Maker Faire selling their products and kits. There is another fungi store that sells spores that you can innoculate your garden with. We're going to try those this fall.
